Opening Day

For those of you who luckily or accidentally found this blog, here is an introduction to the main theme.

Surrogate Farms is a posting site (for now) that will include most of the activities that are happening in the world of a 5 Acre family farm in Idaho.  Our location was developed in 1925 and our farm house should be a historical home, however our particular county has not developed much for preserving ancestral home information.  There is a 1904 Argo Coal water heater (functional) in our basement and a canning history recorded on cedar wall boards from 1926 - 1939.

Currently we have seventeen hens providing us with about a dozen eggs a day during the winter.  We also have 3 yearling milk goats which we will be breading and milking in the future.  Last year we grew over 4,000 sq feet of garden with beets, beans, peas, lettuce, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, chives, spinach, swiss chard, carrots and peppers.

In this blog I wanted to share the experiences of my small farm with you, as I have some knowledge and talent with such things as a botanist with 16 years of horticultural experience.  However, I feel there is always more to learn so I hope as well to hear feedback from any of you out there with regard to your own experiences.

Welcome to Surrogate Farms.- James
